Meet Alyssa:

Q: What brought you into the field of gender-based violence?

My interest in the field of gender-based violence is rooted in personal experience, having grown up in a violent home. This background gave me firsthand insight into the complexities and lasting impacts of domestic violence. As I developed my storytelling skills through filmmaking, I realized I could use my work to elevate the voices of those affected by trauma and injustice. This drive led me to focus on social issues, especially those impacting marginalized communities. I’m motivated to advocate for others and bring awareness to the nuanced challenges faced by survivors of gender-based violence, which is what ultimately brought me to this field.

Q: What drew you to BWJP?

I was drawn to BWJP because of its strong commitment to supporting survivors and advancing policy changes that address the root causes of gender-based violence. BWJP’s focus on blending legal advocacy with public education resonates with me deeply, as I believe that meaningful change happens when we bridge policy with powerful storytelling. I see this as an opportunity to combine my experience in media and communications with a mission-driven organization that’s at the forefront of social justice, working toward a safer, more equitable society.

Q: What are you most looking forward to working at BWJP?

I'm most looking forward to contributing to BWJP's mission by creating authentic, impactful content that reaches and engages diverse audiences. I’m excited to work on campaigns that not only inform but also resonate with those directly affected by gender-based violence, giving them a platform to feel seen and supported. I’m also eager to collaborate with a passionate team that shares my commitment to driving change, learning from their expertise, and finding innovative ways to expand BWJP's reach and impact.

Q: How do you like to spend your time outside of work?

Outside of work, I’m driven by a love for exploration, personal challenges, and storytelling. I’m passionate about travel, as it allows me to immerse myself in new cultures, perspectives, and histories that often influence my work as a filmmaker and storyteller. My dog, Archie, is my constant adventure buddy, and we love exploring both nearby trails and new destinations together.

I also enjoy pushing my limits through triathlons; the physical and mental discipline required for training has become a grounding force in my life, giving me a sense of resilience and focus that I carry into my work. Filmmaking remains a big part of my life outside of the office, where I’m often working on personal projects that explore themes of identity, community, and resilience, especially from my Mexican American perspective.

My partner, Janae, who works at Valor supporting survivors of violence, has been an incredible influence and source of inspiration. We connect over our shared commitment to advocacy, often discussing ways to support marginalized voices and bring more awareness to social issues we both care about deeply. Time with her, Archie, and friends keeps me balanced and motivated, fueling my commitment to both my personal and professional life.
