BWJP Welcomes Brittany Tucker, as the new Senior Project Manager/Staff Attorney of the Firearms Technical Assistance Project (FTAP)

I’m a Michigander through and through, I’ve lived in other places but there’s no place like home. I received my law degree and doctoral degree from Michigan State University, GO GREEN, GO WHITE, where I studied family dynamics, race and ethnicity, and law and society. Prior to coming to BWJP, I spent my time as a researcher studying financial elder abuse and access to justice in the juvenile court as well as a litigator in Detroit and the Metro Detroit area serving domestic violence survivors and families engaged in the abuse and neglect system.

We are privileged to bring Brittany's knowledge and dedication to BWJP. She is a great asset to the BWJP team and we cannot wait to see her excel here. - Amy J. Sánchez, CEO BWJP

Meet Brittany:

Q: What brought you into the field of gender-based violence?

I went to law school knowing I wanted to practice family law. This led me to a family law
clinic where I worked with LEP women who were domestic violence survivors. One client in particular solidified my desire to assist survivors who had no one to advocate for them. When it was time to look for jobs, I looked specifically for family law jobs where I could continue the work I began in law school. I landed a VOCA DV Staff attorney position with the local legal aid organization and now I find it impossible to practice family law without looking at it through a
domestic violence lens.

Q: What drew you to BWJP?

I learned about BWJP during COVID, I must have learned about it through one of my circles or
inadvertently signed up for the newsletter through one of the other forums I was already
engaged in and started receiving correspondence from the organization.

Q: What are you most looking forward to working at BWJP?

I’m excited to apply the things I’ve learned in the courtroom to inform processes and
protocols for the sites we work with. I’ve known for a while that I wanted to do this type of
work and just did not know where to look. I’ve spent my career in systems that did not cater to the realities people were experiencing in everyday life and those systems simply do not work.

Q: How do you like to spend your time outside of work?

I have a large extended family and spend a lot of my free time with them, which I enjoy immensely. However, when I’m looking to have solo Brittany time I enjoy semi solo traveling (vacating with people I know but not too close to), rolling skating, gardening, and I don’t enjoy working out but it takes up a lot of my time.
