MINNEAPOLIS, MN—Global Rights for Women (GRW) has officially merged with the Battered Women’s Justice Project (BWJP), becoming the Center on Global Rights for Women—the latest specialized Center under the BWJP umbrella. This strategic alignment strengthens the collective mission to end gender-based violence and enhances the capacity to support survivors both domestically and globally.
“By combining resources, we can better serve more communities across the U.S. and globally,” said Amy Sánchez, CEO of BWJP. “Both GRW and BWJP are committed to collaborative partnerships with agency professionals, survivor advocacy groups, and civil society. Together, we can enhance our efforts and advance justice for survivors.”
Founded in 1993, BWJP is the leader at the intersection of gender-based violence and legal systems, advancing bold solutions that center survivors, strengthen justice responses, and drive lasting change in communities. In 2014, Cheryl Thomas founded GRW, an organization dedicated to legal and systems reform to end gender-based violence worldwide. GRW’s survivor-centered approach underscores the importance of coordinated community responses and institutional accountability.
Cheryl Thomas, Executive Director of Global Rights for Women, added, “In today's challenging geopolitical climate, our merger with BWJP will bolster our capacity, amplify our impact, and broaden our mission. This strategic alliance strengthens our movement for the long term, offering greater value to our current and future partners through unified resources and expertise. GRW and BWJP share a vision made possible by our dedicated community of supporters.”
The Battered Women’s Justice Project’s mission is to promote change within the civil and criminal legal systems to improve their effectiveness in delivering safety, justice, and security for survivors of gender-based violence, their families, and communities. Through a dynamic network of policy and practice centers, BWJP’s experts train and support the people who shape systems—helping them drive real, lasting change. We believe the greatest impact for survivors comes when legal systems are reimagined to foster healing, accountability, and long-term safety.
