Part 1: Empower H.E.R. Stories of Hope, Equality, and Resilience

Things Survivors Wish You Knew Series

By Patrice Tillery

As a survivor-centered organization, BWJP approaches its work from the survivors' perspective. From this focus, we created our Gift Justice 2023 holiday campaign, focusing on Things Survivors Wish You Knew. We had such a positive reaction to this campaign that we decided to use it to create a series for our website so these stories can continue to inform and empower.

In this series, we aim to share tools that could help someone in an abusive situation. Throughout the series, we will explore different things survivors tell us they wish those in their support systems understood. We will also offer some ways that you can support and show up for survivors and help them navigate their difficult journey.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, “1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner.” If 33% of women and 25% of men have experienced physical violence by an intimate partner, either you or someone you interact with has been, is, or will be impacted by this epidemic. And those are just the statistics for abuse by physical violence.

There are many types of abuse. The scars left by emotional abuse, the erosion of self-worth due to constant belittlement, and the fear instilled by psychological control are often unseen but have a profound and resonant impact. Financial exploitation, too, can be a powerful tool of abuse because it limits freedom, perpetuates dependency, and is a means of control. The Allstate Foundation has partnered with BWJP to host the Moving Ahead curriculum on our online learning platform, The Learning Community. The Moving Ahead curriculum covers various important financial topics, including budgeting, managing debt, and improving credit. This course helps survivors move from short-term safety to long-term security. Keep reading this series to learn more about what survivors wish you knew and how we can support them.
