In an attempt to enhance the safety of those victimized by offenders, probation officers are increasingly interacting with victims. This session addresses signs of secondary trauma that could result from hearing traumatic stories. Suggestions for dealing with our own trauma and that of the person who was victimized are offered. The presenter will discuss ways to help a traumatized individual and empower them through victim-centered interviewing practices. The historical roles of probation/parole interviews are examined to see how these practices may endanger those who have been victimized. Finally, some practical policies and interviewing skills are discussed.
